Eye Exams
What to Expect During Your Eye Examination
When you visit us for an eye examination in Lilydale, we take time to understand your vision concerns, lifestyle needs and medical history.
Vision Assessment
We test how well you see at various distances and determine if you need corrective lenses or if your current prescription needs updating. This includes checking for nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.
Eye Health Screening
Using advanced diagnostic equipment, we examine the internal and external structures of your eyes, looking for signs of:
- Glaucoma: We measure eye pressure and assess optic nerve health to detect this “silent thief of sight” early
- Macular degeneration: Advanced imaging helps us identify changes in the central retina
- Cataracts: We monitor lens clarity and advise when intervention might be beneficial
- Diabetic retinopathy: Regular screening is crucial for patients with diabetes
- Other eye conditions: From dry eye to retinal tears, we’re trained to recognise and manage various eye health issues
Binocular Vision Testing
We assess how well your eyes work together, checking for muscle imbalances or coordination issues that can cause eye strain, headaches or reading difficulties.
Personalised Recommendations
After your exam, we discuss our findings in plain language and recommend the best solutions for your needs, whether that’s new glasses, contact lenses, eye exercises or referral to a specialist if needed.
Advanced
Diagnostic Technology
Digital Retinal Imaging
Digital retinal imaging captures a detailed picture of the back of your eye, showing the retina, optic disc and blood vessels. This helps us detect eye diseases early and monitor the health of your eyes over time. Retinal imaging allows us to get a much wider digital view of the retina, revealing conditions that might be missed with traditional examination methods alone.
Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
OCT is a non-invasive imaging test that uses light waves to take cross-sectional pictures of your retina. With OCT, we can see each of the retina’s distinctive layers, allowing us to map and measure their thickness. These measurements are invaluable for diagnosing and monitoring glaucoma and diseases of the retina, including macular degeneration. Think of it as an MRI for your eyes – providing detailed images that help us detect problems at their earliest stages.
Corneal Topography
Corneal topography is a computer-assisted diagnostic tool that creates a three-dimensional map of your cornea’s surface curvature. Since the cornea is responsible for about 70% of the eye’s focusing power, irregularities can significantly affect your vision. This technology detects irregular conditions invisible to conventional testing, making it essential for contact lens fitting, especially for Ortho-K lenses, and for detecting conditions like keratoconus.
Visual Field Assessment
Visual field testing detects dysfunction in your central and peripheral vision, which may be caused by glaucoma, neurological conditions or other medical issues. This computerised test maps your entire field of vision, helping us identify blind spots or areas of vision loss you might not have noticed.
Specialised
Health Assessment
Glaucoma Assessment
Early detection through regular eye examination is the key to protecting your vision from glaucoma damage. Our comprehensive glaucoma assessment includes five critical tests:
- Eye pressure measurement (tonometry)
- Optic nerve examination for shape and colour changes
- Complete visual field testing
- Angle assessment where the iris meets the cornea
- Corneal thickness measurement
Diagnosing glaucoma requires careful evaluation of the optic nerve, and we combine multiple testing methods to ensure accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment recommendations.
Diabetic Eye Health Checks
Diabetes profoundly affects many areas of your body, including your eyes. It increases your risk for glaucoma and cataracts, but our primary concern is diabetic retinopathy – a condition that develops when blood vessels in your retina become damaged. As the damage worsens, vision loss can occur. If you have diabetes, regular eye examinations are essential. We can detect early signs of diabetic retinopathy before you notice any symptoms, allowing for timely intervention to protect your sight.
Macular Health Checks
It’s possible to have early signs of macular degeneration without knowing. This is why regular professional vision tests are vital. We look for symptoms including:
- Difficulty reading or recognising faces
- Distortions where straight lines appear wavy
- Dark patches or empty spaces in the centre of your vision
- Changes in colour perception
Never ignore any changes to your vision. Early detection of macular degeneration allows us to monitor the condition and recommend appropriate treatment or referral to slow its progression.
Colour Vision Assessment
Some people have defective colour vision, which may be inherited or acquired later in life due to eye disease. This condition is more commonly found in males. Most people with colour vision deficiency aren’t totally colour blind – they have a reduced ability to recognise or discriminate certain colours and see colours differently from those with normal colour vision.
We can assess your colour vision to determine if you have any deficiencies, which is particularly important for certain careers and activities.
Children's
Eye Care
Digital Retinal Imaging
Eye disorders are amongst the most common long-term health problems experienced by children, and routine developmental tests may not recognise many such disorders. With 1 in 5 Australian children suffering from undetected vision problems, a comprehensive eye test before primary school commences and regularly thereafter is of great importance. Regular eye examinations allow children to maximise their potential and ensure they’re not missing out, both in the classroom and the world around them. Outcomes for childhood eye disorders are often far better when picked up earlier, which could make a huge difference in your child’s overall development.
Child-Friendly Eye Testing
Our optometrists are trained in testing children’s vision and create a comfortable, welcoming environment for your child. We use age-appropriate testing techniques to ensure accurate results, even with very young children who may not yet be able to read letters. We make the experience positive and stress-free, helping your child feel at ease throughout their examination.
Children's Eyewear
We offer a wide variety of lenses designed for the specific needs of school-aged children and young, developing eyes. Our extensive range of frames accommodates infants through to pre-teens, including various colours, shapes and styles from brands such as:
- Nike
- Lacoste
- Tomato Glasses
- And many more child-friendly options
We’re also more than happy to do further investigation beyond our extensive range to ensure we find the perfect pair of glasses for your child.

VicRoads Driving Assessments
Vision is crucial when driving – it allows you to judge potential hazards and keep yourself and other road users safe. When applying for a driver’s licence in Victoria, you’re required to declare any illness or disability that could affect your ability to drive safely. Our optometrists can check your vision and provide the required certificate stating that your eyesight is satisfactory for driving. We test for short and long-sightedness that may need correction while driving and assess your visual fields to ensure you meet VicRoads requirements.
Low Vision Assessments
Low vision is often a loss of sharpness or visual acuity. It may also present as a loss of field of vision, light sensitivity or a loss of contrast. A person is said to have low vision when their eyesight is limited or impaired and cannot be adequately corrected with surgery, conventional glasses or contact lenses. We provide comprehensive low vision assessments and can recommend specialised aids and strategies to help you make the most of your remaining vision, maintaining independence and quality of life.
Sports Vision
Sport is an important part of many people’s lives, from weekend warriors to elite athletes. Vision plays a huge role in ball sports and movement through space. Efficient visual skills are important for spatial judgement and visual anticipation. Whether you need specialised sports eyewear, want to optimise your visual performance or require prescription solutions for your sport, our optometrists can help with all your sports vision needs.
